Leutasch

Leutasch and surrounding area

Leutasch is a high alpine glacial valley that stretches 16km northeast from the Hohe Munde mountain to the border with Germany. The turquoise “Leutascher Ache” stream winds its way along the valley through the magnificent Geisterklamm (Spirit Gorge) before joining the Isar river in Mittenwald.
The area has a very peaceful rural feel with chickens and goats in gardens and an annual tractor festival. The population of about 2200 is spread between many small villages and hamlets. Happy Mountains Holiday Apartments are located in Weidach, the largest of the villages. Weidach has many amenities including an excellent supermarket, a bank, pubs, a good choice of restaurants, a ski slope and a swimming pool.
Leutasch is wonderful in all seasons. Spring brings meadows full of wild flowers and early butterflies. During summer, the pretty wooden houses are covered with bloom-filled window boxes. Autumn colours rival New England and from December, the meadows are covered in snow creating a magical winter wonderland.
There are numerous outdoor activities for all seasons and all weathers. Alternatively, you could just relax at the Alpenbad, or in one of the many cosy alpine huts.

Getting there and away

Although it feels a world apart from city life, Leutasch is very accessible from both Innsbruck and Munich. Innsbruck (Airport and city centre) is about 30 minutes drive away (approx 30km). From Innsbruck it is possible to travel to and from Leutasch by public transport, via a train to Seefeld (45 minutes) and a connecting bus (10 minutes).

Munich (in Germany) is 2 hours away by train from Mittenwald station (14km from Weidach). Munich Airport is further north and takes about 2.5 hours by car or train (change at Munich Central Station or at Munich Pasing). The train is good value with a “Werdenfels Ticket”. This ticket costs about 24 euro for one person, additional people can be added at 4 euro each (5 people max). This can be purchased at the train station at the airport.
A local taxi company runs shared minibus taxis to and from Munich airport for around 85€ return per person. Book in advance at www.tirol-taxi.at

www.meinfernbus.de run five buses per day from Munich airport to Seefeld (Rosshütte, 5 minutes walk to Seefeld centre) for 15 EUR each way if you book online.

Surrounding area

Seefeld (10 minutes by bus or car, 6km) is larger than Leutasch and is a lovely place for an afternoon wander. It feels less rural and more resort-like than Leutasch and has more shops and amenities.

Mittenwald (in Germany) is a picturesque village with a stream running down the high street and traditional painted houses. A peaceful and scenic walk or cycle along the Leutascher Ache will eventually bring you to Mittenwald, or there are regular buses. It takes about 15 minutes to drive (approx 16km). What better way to finish your walk than a Bavarian Beer from Mittenwald’s own brewery or a fantastic local ice-cream.
